Attending the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this year? Make sure you check out three plays written by some very talented Hild Bede Alumni:

  1. ‘The Babysitters’ by our very own Lewis Meade, and Josephine Butler’s Matt Dann (starring fellow Hild Beder, Alex Morgan) running 31 July-16 August.
  2. ‘The Noctambulist’, written by the winner of this year’s Darren Funnell Playwright Award, Joe Skelton (starring other Hild Beders, Dan Scott, Lily Morgan and Xander Drury) running 2-17 August.
  3. ‘Massive Dad’ a sketch comedy group featuring Hild Bede alumna and writer-performer Tessa Coates, running from 5-12 & 14-25 August.

Tickets for all shows can be purchased via https://tickets.edfringe.com/
If you know of another Hild Beder’s involvement, do get in touch and let us know.

Dr Alan Pearson (affectionately known as ‘Dr P’) was the Principal of the College of St Hild & St Bede 2000-08. He is the only Principal to have two portraits displayed in College. The first, a serious and intense painting commissioned by the College, is located with other Principals’ portraits in the Senior Common Room. The second, painted by a Hild Bede student (Jess Elkin, SRC Treasurer 2008/09) who captures his friendly and personable nature, can aptly be found in the Alan Peason Common Room. Both are strikingly beautiful pieces of artwork.

Dr P remains a loyal supporter of the College following his retirement and still frequents a variety of College events (most recently at last month’s Presidents’ dinner, pictured).

It was a pleasure to welcome back various past Presidents of the SRC on Saturday at the annual Presidents’ Dinner held in the Joachim Room. We were graced with:

– Mark Stubbs 1989/90
– Stan Hecks 1994/95
– Mikey Bruce 2000/01
– Rachel Gutteridge (née Skelton) 2004/05
– Jon Broomhall (JJB) 2006/07
and of course, outgoing President,
Rob Danvers 2013/14
& incoming President,
Kirsty McLaren 2014/15.

We were also joined by two former Principals: Dr Vernon Armitage (1975-97) & Dr Alan Pearson (2000-08), and former Senior Tutor, Carol Carr, amongst other College staff.

It was wonderful to see the loyalty and dedication to the College remaining strong despite the years passed.

Jean Miller, a St Hild’s alumna and Dramsoc member, reminisces:

“As for myself, a mere actress who always seemed to play the role of a loose woman! Bathing a naked man on stage in front of the Principal, Miss Joachim, was, well, an experience. Very modern for the 70’s and very well received! I did what was required as a cast member!! We had fun.”

Pictures from a couple of DramSoc performances c. 1970s – before the days of Hild Bede Theatre. DramSoc constituted both Bede and St Hild’s students. Performances took place in Caedmon Hall or the “Little Theatre” which now serves as a small lecture theatre in the West wing of the School of Education (formerly Bede College). Many traces of Bede College’s legacy remain evident inside the Education building and its architecture.

If you have any memories or pictures you would like to share from your time at College, we’d love to hear from you! hildbede.alumni@durham.ac.uk

Durham Regatta 2014 took place this weekend with Hild Bede boasting fantastic results – each crew entered reached the final in their category. Overall, we fielded 3 eights and 2 fours over the 2 days racing, competed in 4 divisions, with each crew gaining silverware: two wins and three runners-up.

Hild Bede Boat Club won fastest college coxed men’s four and fastest college coxed men’s eight. Notable achievements included the HBBC men’s 1st eight beating the Newcastle University 2nds in the elite category final and the HBBC men’s 2nd eight beat Lancaster 1st in IM3. Our senior women’s coxed eights were the fastest college in their division reaching the final of the high-ranking IM3 category beating Hatfield and Chester-le-Street, but losing out to a strong Durham University crew by just a length.

Our Summer graduation ceremonies begin tomorrow and we are very excited to see our graduands enter the Cathedral and leave as the next generation of Hild Bede Alumni.

Feel free to welcome the latest Durham graduates to our alumni community by sharing some of your tips on how to cope after leaving The Bubble or getting by in the ‘real world’!

Selfies with the VC? A Hild Bede Graduation – Summer Congregation 2014

Alumni_cong2-288

Earlier this month, the College of St Hild & St Bede was extremely proud to see its latest cohort of eager graduates leave the ‘bubble’ and enter the ‘real’ world. It’s an iconic image: pairs of graduates striding proudly from Castle’s Great Hall to the Cathedral, gowns billowing behind them with their array of vibrantly coloured hoods. The transitional period where graduands pass through the Cathedral doors and leave as the next generation of Durham graduates is a highly symbolic and traditional ‘rite of passage’ in our University’s history. Following in the footsteps of so many Hild Beders before them, the Class of 2014 stepped up to shake the hand of the Chancellor (one brave/foolish graduand actually selfie-ed with him – well, I suppose it is 2014) and walked across the cobbles and into the next chapter of their lives.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

For our graduates – this cohort matriculated in 2010 or 2011 (I know many alumni must be cringing at how old they feel right now; it’s hard to believe that so much time has passed!) – Congregation ceremonies represent the culmination of 3/4 years of hard work: revision, essays, labs, examinations, finals, not to mention the array of clubs or societies Hild Beders are involved in simultaneously. Hild Bede students seem to have the innate tendency to work hard, and play harder. This year alone we have seen 4 inspiring College theatre productions, 2 College balls, a sell-out College Day, a packed Christmas chapel service, Hild Bedestock festival, 10 raucous formals (and a partridge in a pear tree). It’s astounding that the vast majority of our students manage to graduate with a good degree and is surely indicative of the type of all-round achieving individuals that Hild Bede attracts. But who will be destined to become MPs, leaders of social change, athletes, media personalities, the next James Bond or the future winner of Strictly Come Dancing?

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

This was the Vice Chancellor’s last graduation ceremony before he retires next month. The theme throughout his Congregation speech reflected the University’s mantra “shaped by the past, creating the future”. Prof Higgins advised the graduands to strive for excellence in all areas of life, to genuinely seek to change the world for the better and to always reflect on their time at Durham fondly. He reminded a captive audience of several astonishing feats achieved by Durham graduates, including the Fair Trade movement (founded by Richard Adams), captaining the England cricket team (Hild Bede’s own Nasser Hussain), and importantly, owning one’s own international wine company (Bob and Barbara Laithwaite, who both received honorary degrees during this year’s Congregation ceremonies). I’m sure all graduates will attest to leaving the cathedral feeling inspired and with the knowledge that they were more than capable of being the next trailblazers in their respective fields.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Our revamped Congregation dinners were a huge success with personalised “Hild Bede” table decorations and an interactive after-dinner speech. The Principal invited all graduands to complete the sentence “I will Never Forget…” and record their favourite Hild Bede memories, which he would (bravely) dare to read out at the end of the meal. It was lovely to listen to how each graduand valued Hild Bede in different ways and to hear the audible laughs, “oohs” and “ahhs” as we all resonated with one story or another. One graduand from each evening was invited to toast to the College and speak about their time at Hild Bede. The impact of the number of opportunities presented to each individual was truly evident: College life really is what you make of it! Despite being the largest undergraduate College, the Congregation dinners served as a wonderfully personal and fitting way to end one’s time at Hild Bede. I really felt that one graduand got it completely right when writing “I will Never Forget… applying to Hild Bede because it’s the largest, hoping that statistically it would have a higher chance of me making friends. It turned out to be the most intimate of places”.

A group of wise old men once told me, “Never Forget where you’re coming from”. Whilst the distance grows, I hope your College spirit never fades… no one ever really leaves Hild Bede and your graduation marks the beginning of a lifelong relationship with College as part of the Hild Bede Alumni Association! This will enable us to successfully purchase a new Four for the start of next season. If you are interested and want to find out more, please get in touch at hildbede.alumni@durham.ac.uk.

May 2014′s #MondayFunday fact-of-the-week articles

Some delightfully “Odd Memories” from Bede College: –

“Prune eating championships in the ‘thirties, the ultimate victor managing to consume (under strict supervision and against the clock) 147 prunes at one sitting.”

“During a College economy drive a flood of evening nine o’clock biscuits so tough as to be virtually uneatable: and how the ever resourceful students of that era turned them into games counters, bowled them, spun them, flipped them, carved them and sent them suitably beribboned to friends at the end of the earth.”

St. Hild's College Colours scarf circa 1960s

St. Hild’s College Colours scarf circa 1960s

One of our alumnae has just sent in this old St Hild’s College scarf which we will be replicating (along with the Bede scarf) and make available for purchase this year. The St. Hild’s colours of purple, green and white colours were also the colours of the suffragette movement and are still proudly worn by our Women’s Rugby Club today (with the Men’s Club wearing the Bede colours of light and dark blue). You can also see the St. Hild’s crest and the sewed on sports badges (since this was a ‘Colours’ scarf) representing the owner’s Full Colours in basketball, rowing, canoeing and tennis! Whilst current male students can still purchase Colours ties from College, it’s a shame that no equivalent tradition exists for the ladies today. Perhaps it will come back into fashion when we bring back the scarves…?

The Sounding of the Retreat 2014

10308062_252430158274937_2249303062858938962_nLast Saturday saw us commemorate the 99th Anniversary of the Battle of Gravenstafel Ridge in the Second Battle of Ypres, 25th April 1915. This annual act of dedication and rememberance honours the lives lost from the Eighth Battalion of the Durham Light Infantry and the Bede College Contingent. Taking place on the College War Memorial, Bede lawn was filled with past and present students, staff members and friends of the College in support of returning DLI members. All were moved, humbled and reminded of how these brave men, alumni of Bede College, “gave up their today, for your tomorrow”.

THE COLLEGE AND THE DURHAM LIGHT INFANTRY

Bede College was always a place of traditional loyalties and of ideals of service to the community, though the particular expression of those virtues may have changed with changing demands. It was natural in the 19th Century that those loyalties should find a focus in the Durham Rifle Volunteer Corps, out of which grew the 8th Battalion, the Durham Light Infantry, one of whose Companies, C Company, later A Company, was known as the ‘Bede College Contingent’ as early as 1880.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

No doubt it was that tradition that lay behind what seems to have been a unique feature of the Church Teacher Training Colleges: that they sent past and present students as organised bodies to the Great War. Possibly none sent a larger contingent than Bede and certainly to none came a more sudden or a more severe testing.

The Bede Territorials at the Scaborough Camp, 1912. It was traditionally expected that all students who were fit and able, along with at least one representative of the staff, should join the Territorials which were attached to the 8th Durham Light Infantry (DLI).

The Bede Territorials at the Scaborough Camp, 1912. It was traditionally expected that all students who were fit and able, along with at least one representative of the staff, should join the Territorials which were attached to the 8th Durham Light Infantry (DLI).

The Bede College Contingent, consisting of 102 Officers, N.C.O.’s and Men, as part of the 8th Battalion D.L.I., joined the B.E.F. in France in April, 1915 and was thrown into the front line trenches during the second Battle of Ypres. The Bede Spirit was not quenched by the Company’s first experience of coming under shellfire. The official history records how they recalled the fireworks at Durham Regatta.

Through the darkness came the voice of some irrepressible Bede College member of A Company as a shell passed over. “Aye it reminds yer o’Durham Regatta. Now, lads up goes another! All Together! Bang! Mind the stick!” Then some one called, “Who’s won the Grand!” and there were rival cries of “City” and “Bede”.

That was on the 25th April, when A and D Companies found themselves on Gravenstafel Ridge, with the Canadians on their right and the French Zouaves to their left, the latter having suffered the first gas attack of the War. They helped to save Ypres, but the Bede Contingent suffered grievous losses: 17 killed, 10 wounded and 31 taken prisoner. There is a photograph of the survivors, grouped like the sports teams’ photographs of the day, with the poignant caption ‘Bede, all that was left’. We remember them and those who served at other times and in other places, with penitence and pride.

Spring at Hild Bede, London Drinks, Elections, and the Yearbook Formal

Dearest alumni of the College of St Hild & St Bede,

1970662_10100110099936306_262061753_n

Daffodils, Hild and blue skies, taken by Gabriel Fidler (Postgraduate President)

Spring has well and truly sprung in Durham with the Hild Bede grounds looking lush and rejuvenated after the winter. Crocuses have sprouted, blossom has bloomed, and the sun is making a welcome delay in setting and bathing Durham Cathedral in those glorious sunsets we all remember from our time here (aside from that annoying hiccup of smog we recently experienced – someone must have known I was writing this blog post!). 7eb3674892ab11e3825e12d74921a67b_8The changing seasons, I believe, have been brilliantly captured via the @hildbede Instagram account I introduced last year. For social media savvy alumni, they can download the app and follow @hildbede for scenic pictures of various aspects of Hild Bede and Durham for some nostalgia. The pictures range from the Cathedral to the Vernon Arms, formals to the College Pond, Wednesday sports to College staff, and everything in between! I’d love requests for new Instagram subjects so please don’t hesitate to contact me via email (hildbede.alumni@durham.ac.uk) or over Instagram!

1656398_229890047195615_2095089769_nWe have just elected our new SRC President for 2014/15, Kirsty McLaren, who ran a brilliant campaign. Kirsty is a final year Psychology student hailing from just down the road in Stockton. I’m really excited for the future of the SRC and think we’re headed for some (good!) change with Kirsty as our new voice of the student body. This is not to forget poor Rob Danvers (current SRC President) who has only been in the role for 5 months before having his successor elected. We must, of course, recognise that Rob is doing a fantastic job of running the SRC and still has a long while until his tenure comes to an end – so we have lots still to come from him.

1780745_10151868740807261_326538547_nThis year Student Elections have reached an all new level of intensity. It was absolutely brilliant to see students so eager to be involved on the Executive Committee and campaigning creatively to try and persuade their peers that they are the best person for the job! Some particular highlights have been imaginative banners, election ‘memes’, the erection of a gazebo in Caedmon hall, a variety of video campaigns/election websites, and even gold/silver human statues?! Friends of candidates loyally displayed their support wearing branded t-shirts, wristbands and cheering them on during the husts. Do you remember constant flyering in the dinner hall in your day? Was their fierce competition for positions? (There were 5 candidates for Chairperson this year!).

This leads nicely into a dramatic piece of news regarding the SRC: what were SRC meetings like in your day? How often did they run, and were they popular? When I was a student, we had fortnightly SRC meetings which were fairly well attended, particularly by sports teams who had to send 10% of their club in order to maintain their SRC funding. There is, however, a “general sense of apathy” amongst the student body today which has led to poor attendance. Rob has rewritten the constitution and we will now have only 2 SRC meetings a term, in line with other College procedures. It is hoped that this will encourage students to attend and seem like less of a “chore”. Rob would be happy to discuss the details of this decision further, so feel free to drop him a line with any thoughts or feedback at: Hild-Bede.SRC@durham.ac.uk .

This term has also seen the re-introduction of the Yearbook Formal, which was a resounding success and will be followed by a brand new Hild Bede Yearbook, which I know many of our students are keenly anticipating. We awarded trophies for the more prestigious awards such as Best Hild Bede Club/Society, Mrs Hild, Mr Bede etc., and certificates presented to some of our more tongue in cheek awards (e.g. Couple That Should Have Been, Biggest Bromance/Womance, Most Likely To Get IDed at 30, etc.). Our freshers certainly weren’t used to paying so much attention during a formal (the awards went on for about half an hour!) so next year we think we’ll be reducing the awards to just the top 5 or so! Regardless, it was great hearing everyone cheering their friends or favourite teams, and I felt a real sense of camaraderie and College spirit during the formal.

Open Day bannersAt the beginning of the Easter holidays we saw another horde of timid sixth formers make their way up to Durham for the annual post-application Hild Bede Open Day. For those who aren’t aware, we invite all prospective students who had successful applications to Hild Bede to stay in student accommodation and get a brief insight into College life for 24 hours! We held a number of talks to ease their (and their parents’) anxieties about the transition to independence, gave them tours of the grounds and facilites, but more importantly – introduced them to The Vernon Arms (don’t worry, the ID police were rife), karaoke and Take That’s #NeverForget. Every sixth former had their faces painted with red stripes to show their allegiance to Hild Bede (why red and not blue you ask? I really don’t know) and were dancing till the early hours. We’re hoping to see many of them back in September 2014! Well done to all our Open Day reps for being model Hild Beders.

You all should have received my first email of 2014 inviting you to our London reunion (if you didn’t, please email me with your current email address, or click here for details of future alumni events). It was an overwhelming success with alumni attending from many different eras meeting to catch-up and reminisce about their College days. We had some Bede men right up to graduates of the last few years and everything in between! It was a lovely warm Summer-esque evening and what better way to spend it in the beauty and splendour of Cornhill’s The Counting House? All took advantage of the College’s bar tab and enjoyed meeting our Vice Principal, Laura Wilson. We were also honoured to be joined by Michael Gaunt, theatre professional, who accompanied Ed Funnell and partner to discuss the launching of a new student play writing competition in Ed’s name (click here to find out more about the award). If, like Ed, you wanted to give back to College in a unique way, do get in touch with the Principal who would be delighted to discuss any propositions.

All that’s left to say is regarding Alumni publications! I am currently in the middle of writing HB Resurgo (our termly e-newsletter), so that will be with you later this month. The Alumni Association magazine deadline for submitting contributions/stories/news is fast approaching (April 20th). A number of younger graduates don’t receive the magazine, because after their automatic membership of 3 years – they fail to sign-up again. This is such a shame as it is a fantastic and comprehensive review of all things Hild Bede! The e-newsletter is just a short, sharp termly update – but the magazine is the real heart of the Association! For only £5 a year (which covers printing costs & delivery) you can subscribe to the magazine and become an official member of the alumni Association. Please email julie.blake@durham.ac.uk to set up a standing order (or download the form by clicking here) and she will send you a copy of last July’s magazine to whet your appetite.

See you at College Day on the 3rd May! From a very quiet (all our undergrads are on Easter break!) but lovely and Sunny Durham,
